The 86 List
[Visit site]
|
The 86 list is a three piece punkrock band from Honolulu, Hawaii. We have been playing since October 1999. Our music is heavily enfluenced by some of the older punkrock bands such as the Clash, X, Ramones, Minor Threat as well as groups like Operation Ivy, Dead Kennedys, Anti-Flag, and Elvis Costello. Our lyrics are semi-political addressing such issues as police brutality, education, government corruption, racism, the military, and civil rights.

The Hellcaminos are more than just a punk band or a Rockabilly band. They are a band trying to survive amidst a scene full of people not ready for change. Hawaii is the land of Top 40 Radio. They are a band that shouldn’t exist here, but they do and if they can change the way one kid feels about local music then they’ve done their job. Their crazy stage shows and catchy songs have made them one of the most popular bands in Honolulu’s underground music scene

White Rose
[Visit site]
|
The unique band moniker honors the German Resistance group White Rose who waged a leaflet campaign opposing the Nazi regime. This reference defines the musician’s belief system and serves as a reflection of their humanity and exemplary character. It speaks volumes about the integrity and sincerity put forth from the hearts and minds of talented, gifted musicians that have a lot to say. With subject matter ranging from Imperialism (both political and cultural) to social awareness to confronting personal demons and everything in between, they never get too wrapped up in the message to just plain rock out.

Pacifica
[Visit site]
|
Formed in January of 2004. It started out as five guys who just wanted to play music. The members were different then, and neither of us had played in any previous bands. We played covers and fooled around with original ideas for about four months until we started having differences. After shuffling through members, all we had left at one point were 2 guitarists and a drummer (Jay, Earney, & Ricky). Unsure of what was to happen next, we continued to practice and work on some original material. We eventually filled in a bass player with Ikaika, who had previously played with the band Flemface. Through Ikaika we picked up a singer named Kika, who had also played in Flemface, but more notably sang for a band called Until September. We all came together and everything just seemed to work out perfect. We shuffled through many name ideals and finally settled on Pacifica. Since then we have had much success and have created quite a fan base on the island. We have also opened for many mainland acts as they’ve came to play on the island. We’ve pretty much done all we can here, so we’re hoping to move to mainland sometime soon. Hopefully you’ll be able to catch us in a town near you.

The Malcognitas
[Visit site]
|
With a penchant for dark melodic songs that ride the fringes of goth, noise and pop, the Malcognitas are raising the bar in the mostly punk dominated music scene in Hawaii. An experienced rhythm section led by drummer Jack Tawil and the overdriving bass lines by Lorenzo Trinidad provide a strong foundation for lead guitarist Yvonne Harada’s rock and noise influenced riffs and vocalist Ara Laylo’s somber melodies. Together they form a unique chemistry of rock that is inspired from the likes of Joy Division, Blondie, The Smiths, and Bauhaus. The malcognita is literally your bad thoughts, your darkest side transformed anew.

S1-Atomic
[Visit site]

S1-Atomic In a national survey at the turn of the millennium, both journalists and the public ranked the dropping of the atomic bomb and the end of the Second World War as the top news stories of the twentieth-century. The advent of nuclear weapons, made possible by the Manhattan Project, it brought an end to World War II . It brought with it the atomic age and determined how the next war, the Cold War, would be fought. 9/11 was organized by the Bush administration, they scared us into giving up our freedoms with the patriot act, and launched a war under false pretenses in our people’s name. This war has stood to make the vice president among others extremely wealthy. they killed thousands of innocent people to usher us into an imperialisic police state! THEY SHOULD BE ON TRIAL, NOT LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK! WE ARE THE MANHATTAN PROJECT. FUCK THIS UNJUST WAR!

At Sea
[Visit site]
|
Most audiences fortunate enough to have been witnesses to the musical crimes of At Sea might note the following: their disruptive ignorance of old musical rules, their lack of theatrical stage gimmicks aside from imitating head-down shoegaze guitarists of the early 90s, the confusions over misspellings of set lists, the presumptuous remarks they make about things they just dont like, and so on and so forth. But sincere observers, partitioned off from disgruntled affiliates or self-appointed critics too quick to call At Sea another post-rock band, will note that the music begins in simplicity and subtleties. It comprises textures, layers, rational systems destroyed by the beauty of orchestral melodies, the drums that sound like the drum tracks from your favorite album (whatever that album happens to be), and the interplay between reverberating waves of sound and sentimental low end. There is no be-all-end-all of description of their music precisely because of the spontaneous arrangement of the process they follow. At one moment a combination of Mozart, Shostakovich, and Debussy springs to mind, at another Monos You Are There, The Cures Pornography, or Mogwais first three albums. There are feelings and not reasons, and the feelings fluctuate. In a sentence, their music is cinematic and best left to the references of images.
