About

About us
Unity Crayons is the only non-profit organization in Hawaii committed to showcasing emerging bands, artists, and performers in “All Ages” venues. They provide a support system for the local music scene catering to many genres of music. Unity Crayons is run by a collective of local musicians, artists, and promoters with the goal to unify the underground music and art of Hawaii. Started on July 28th 2003, the group organized hundreds of shows since.

Mission Statement

Unity Crayons non-profit group exists to promote events and showcase artists, musicians and performers in positive, drug free, all ages environments. Unity Crayons also assists other non-profit organizations with event planning, production and fundraising. Working within the community we strive to bring together the diverse music and art scene and expose young people to positive and constructive forms of expression.

The art scene in Hawaii does not cater very often to people of all ages, and it was because of this reality that Unity Crayons founders decided to make a commitment to making art and music available to everyone. “All Art! All Ages!”

How we started
In the summer of 2003, two local musicians, Jake Foster and Josh Hancock, embarked on a mission to start an all ages nightclub. Coming to the realization that nightclubs stay afloat due to alcohol sales they decided to take a different route…The non-profit route. Together they registered an organization with the Department of Consumer Affairs as a non-profit corporation because this would allow them to tap into resources and funding from grants and donors as apposed to event patrons.

Non-profits operate basically upon donations and grants. As we are a new non-profit we have a very small amount of capital to invest in something like a venue at this present moment. As we write out for grants and host fundraisers we hope to have a venue by July 28th 2006. At this point we are hosting as many events and fundraisers as possible to build a good reputation in the community and to let people know who we are and what we do.

Another side of Unity Crayons is to help out other non-profit groups by way of providing entertainment at their functions and also aiding them in fundraising events. On August 16, 2002 we had our first fundraiser for an outside group (Hale Kipa Human Services) and were able to raise close to $1,000 to donate to their programs. Since then we have hosted other fundraisers for various organizations.

Our basic functions
1. Provide a safe positive environment for people of all ages to experience performance, music, and art.
2. Provide a stage for Hawaii’s underground musicians, bands, artists, and performers.
3. Assist other non-profit groups in fundraising.
